We shipped a 16-inch Japanese stone Gorinto from Japan to a customer in the United States by UPS.
This Gorinto is a stone product that is about 16.14 inches / 41 cm tall and weighs about 32.84 lbs / 14.9 kg. Unlike a small lightweight decoration, this is a heavy stone item. For international shipping, it is important not only to protect the item itself, but also to keep it firmly fixed inside the box, reinforce the cardboard box, and add a clear handling notice so the package is not tipped over during transport.
Granite is a hard and durable material, but if a heavy stone item moves inside the box or the package is laid on its side during transport, the weight itself can create strong impact. For this shipment, we used air cushioning, cardboard materials, cardboard tube supports, cardboard reinforcement, hot glue, plastic straps, FRAGILE stickers, and a clear “Please do not tip it over.” notice to pack the item securely.

This Gorinto weighs about 14.9 kg. It is a size that can be handled by hand, but for international shipping, it is still a very heavy package.
If the item moves even slightly inside the box, the weight of the stone can create strong force against the inside of the package. For that reason, it is not enough to simply wrap the item with cushioning. It is also important to keep the Gorinto fixed in place inside the box.

What We Focus On When Shipping a 16-inch Stone Gorinto Internationally
When shipping a heavy stone product overseas, the most important points are protecting the item itself, keeping it fixed inside the box, and reinforcing the outer package.
First, we protect the stone item carefully. Granite is a hard material, but if strong impact concentrates on a corner, edge, or stepped area, it may cause damage. For that reason, we wrapped the entire Gorinto with air cushioning so direct impact would be less likely to reach the stone surface.
Second, it is important to prevent movement inside the box. A heavy stone product can create strong impact even if it moves only a little during transport. For this shipment, we placed several cardboard tube supports around the Gorinto to help keep it from shifting significantly inside the box.
Finally, we reinforce the outer box itself. For this shipment, we used cardboard reinforcement and bonded the necessary areas with hot glue. We also used packing tape and plastic straps to help keep the outer box secure as a heavy package.
Notice to Prevent the Package from Being Tipped Over
This Gorinto is tall and heavy, so we added a notice asking that the package not be tipped over.
On the side of the box, we wrote “Please do not tip it over.” in English. This notice is intended to help prevent the package from being laid on its side during delivery.
During international shipping, the contents of the package cannot be seen from the outside. A clear handling notice helps make the package easier to understand for carriers and is an important step when shipping a heavy stone product.
Outer Box Reinforcement and UPS Shipping Documents
For international shipping, it is important to protect not only the item itself, but also the condition of the outer box.
For a stone product weighing about 14.9 kg, the bottom and sides of the box can receive a lot of stress. For this reason, we added cardboard reinforcement to the outer box and reinforced the necessary areas with hot glue.
We also used plastic straps in addition to packing tape so the outer box would be less likely to open or lose its shape during transport.
Finally, we attached the UPS international shipping documents to the top of the outer box. For international delivery, it is important that the shipping label and customs documents can be checked easily.
