UPS Shipping: Small Granite Stone Statues to the United States (US) — Packing Method (Japan)

Overview

The most important part of international shipping for stone products is not simply “wrapping with soft cushioning,” but eliminating movement of heavy items. Granite is hard, but it is also heavy. If a package is dropped or compressed, impact can concentrate at a single point, and chips usually occur at corners, rims, and protruding parts (such as the face, hands, or shoulders).

That is why at japanstones.shop we follow a fixed sequence: surface protection → shock absorption → shape locking → double-box (two-shell structure). Each layer is locked in place so it does not loosen during long-distance transit. Below is the exact packing method we used when shipping to the United States (US) via UPS.

Shipping details

  • Carrier: UPS
  • Destination: United States (US)
  • Key focus: No movement inside the box / prevent direct impact to corners and protrusions / reduce carton deformation

Packing materials used

Packing materials used
Newspaper Initial surface protection (prevents scuffs and fine scratches)
Bubble wrap (air-cushion) Shock absorption (reduces point-load impact on corners and protrusions)
Small cartons ×2 (inner boxes) Primary packing (separate storage / stops movement inside each box)
Outer carton Secondary packing (double-box / protection against drops and compression)
Hot glue (glue gun) Applied between the inner carton and outer carton (cardboard-to-cardboard) to reduce shifting and reinforce the structure under heavy load
Craft tape / packing tape Prevents deformation and accidental opening (tape density matters for heavy items)
Stretch film Locks layers so nothing loosens during transit
UPS pouch / document sleeve Protects invoices and paperwork (prevents water damage and tearing)
FRAGILE label Handling notice to improve visibility during sorting and delivery

Packing steps

1) Check condition → surface protection (newspaper)

First, we check the stone statues for any chips or cracks. Then we protect the surface with newspaper to prevent scuffs during handling. This stage is not “impact protection” yet—it is the base layer to keep the surface clean.

2) Multiple layers of bubble wrap (extra thickness on corners and protrusions)

Stone chips when force concentrates at a single point. The face, hands, shoulders, and corners are the top priority, so we build extra thickness there. The goal is not only softness but consistent thickness to spread point-load impacts.

3) Put each statue into a small carton and create “zero movement” (separate packing)

Photo: We crush and fill gaps so nothing moves inside the small carton.

If the item moves even slightly inside the carton, repeated vibration during transit can cause the stone to hit the corners of the box and chip. This is the most important part: we create a condition where “it does not move even when you shake the box.”

4) Place the two inner boxes into the outer carton (double-box structure)

Photo: The inner cartons go into the outer carton to form a double-box system.

The outer carton acts as the shield against drops, compression, and corner impact. The inner cartons are the first shell, and the outer carton is the second shell—so impact does not transfer directly to the stone.

5) Reinforce with tape → lock with stretch film (prevents loosening)

With heavy items, tape can slowly loosen during transit. That is why we use stretch film to unify the outer surface and keep every layer locked so nothing shifts.

6) UPS document pouch + FRAGILE marking

We place invoices and documents into a UPS pouch and fix it securely to the outside. We also apply a FRAGILE sticker for visibility. FRAGILE labels are not perfect, but better visibility reduces the chance of rough handling.

Why this packing method works

Stone is “hard,” but when it breaks, the pattern is usually the same—so the countermeasures are clear.

  • Distribute point-load impact: Build thickness with multiple bubble-wrap layers, protecting corners and protrusions
  • Eliminate movement: Create a zero-movement condition inside each small carton (most important)
  • Two-shell protection: The outer carton absorbs external force so impact does not hit the stone directly
  • Anti-loosening: Lock everything with tape + stretch film so the structure does not collapse

Estimated delivery time

This shipment is to the United States (US) with a UPS tracking number.

“Typical delivery time is 3–5 business days, but delays may occur due to customs or local conditions.”

Thank you very much for your purchase.

Notes for opening the package

Stone is heavy for its size, so please open the package on the floor or on a stable table. Use a cutter lightly and carefully so you do not damage the contents inside.
