Who is Benzaiten?
Benzaiten is one of the celestial deities (Tenbu) who serve as protectors of Buddhism. She originated as Sarasvati, a goddess in Hinduism, and was later incorporated into Buddhism under the name Benzaiten.
Through the long process of Shinbutsu-shūgō, the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism in Japan, she was also embraced within Shinto belief and developed forms of worship unique to Japanese culture. Today, Benzaiten is widely known as a deity associated with eloquence, music, the arts, wisdom, fortune, and graceful power.
In Japan, she is also honored as one of the Seven Lucky Gods, giving her a familiar place in both religious tradition and everyday life.
About the Stone
Natsuyama Stone is a granite quarried in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. It is generally understood to be a Cretaceous granite formed roughly 85 to 100 million years ago. This particular piece uses a rust-toned variety characterized by its soft light brown color.
The natural warmth of this stone pairs well with the quiet dignity of Benzaiten, creating a statue with both spiritual presence and a distinctly Japanese material character.
About the Maker
Stone Carving Works Tomatsu is a stone workshop founded in 1902. The fourth-generation master, a graduate of an art university, specializes in Buddhist statues, komainu, busts, and dragon sculptures. The workshop is known for producing high-level stone carvings on request for other Japanese stonemasons as well.
Why this piece stands out
This is not a mass-produced decorative item. It is a genuine Japanese stone carving made by a long-established workshop, using a recognized stone from one of Japan’s best-known stoneworking regions. Its size makes it suitable for display indoors, while its subject gives it a refined and meaningful presence.
Notes
Please review the photos carefully for texture, color, and hand-carved details. Natural stone may show slight variations in tone, grain, and surface character. These are part of the material itself and not defects.
