🎵 About Benzaiten
Benzaiten is one of the celestial deities (Tenbu) who serve as protectors of Buddhism. She originated as Sarasvati, a goddess in Hinduism, and was incorporated into Buddhism under the name Benzaiten. Through the process of Shinbutsu-shūgō (the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism), she was also embraced by Shinto and underwent various transformations unique to Japanese culture.
🪨 About Ushi-iwa Blue Stone
"Ushi-iwa Aoi-ishi" (Ushi-iwa Bluestone) is a type of stone quarried in the Ushi-iwa area of Hakoyanagi-cho, Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. Known for its fine grain and strong luster when polished, this high-grade stone is often used for premium gravestones and has even been chosen for the gravesites of notable individuals.
The name "Ushi-iwa" (literally “Cow Rock”) comes from a large rock shaped like a cow that once stood in the area. From this region, a deep bluish stone was discovered, giving rise to the name "Ushi-iwa Bluestone."
🏯 About the Maker
Stone Carving Works Tomatsu is a workshop founded in 1902. The fourth-generation master, a graduate of an art university, specializes in crafting Buddhist statues, guardian lion-dog statues (Komainu), busts, and dragon sculptures. The studio is renowned for creating custom stone artworks for other Japanese stonemasons.
