UPS Shipping: Kanshuji Style Stone Lantern to the United States — Packing Method (Japan)
Overview
A repeat customer in the United States (US) purchased our Kanshuji Style Stone Lantern. Stone lanterns are strong, but international shipping can be harsh on heavy items: impact concentrates on edges, corners, and ridges, where chips tend to occur.
For this UPS shipment, our goal is simple: protect the edges, absorb shocks, and create a zero-movement condition inside the carton. Below is the packing method shown in the photos.
Shipping details
- Carrier: UPS (tracking provided)
- Destination: United States (US)
- Delivery result: Delivered safely in 5 days
- Key focus: Protect corners and edges / prevent shifting / keep the carton rigid
Packing materials used
| Air cushions | Shock absorption + fills void space so the stone parts cannot shift inside the carton |
| Reinforced cardboard | Shape locking + edge protection (adds rigidity and reduces point-load impact) |
| Inner carton | Primary protection against crushing and direct hits |
| Packing tape | Reinforces seams and prevents accidental opening |
Packing steps (photo log)
1) Edge-first protection and cushioning

Photo 1: We begin by protecting edges and contact points before building the full protection layers.
2) Build shock absorption with air cushions

Photo 2: Air cushions add shock absorption and reduce point-load impact on corners.
3) Add reinforced cardboard to stabilize the shape

Photo 3: Reinforced cardboard creates a rigid “shell” so pressure is dispersed instead of concentrating on one edge.
4) Lock the package into a “zero movement” condition

Photo 4: We fill voids and tighten the packing so the stone parts cannot shift under vibration.
5) Final sealing and reinforcement

Photo 5: The carton is sealed and reinforced for UPS international handling.
Additional packing photos (same shipment): The following photos show the same packing process from different angles, including reinforcement, sealing, and the final ready-to-ship condition.

Why this packing method works
- Impact is reduced: air cushions absorb shocks during sorting and delivery.
- Edges are protected: reinforced cardboard adds rigidity and disperses pressure.
- Movement is eliminated: voids are filled to prevent shifting under vibration.
- Carton stays stable: reinforced sealing helps the box stay rigid through transit.
Notes for opening the package
Stone is heavy for its size. Please open the package on a stable surface. Use a cutter lightly and carefully so you do not cut into the contents.
