About Hirukawa Stone
Hirukawa granite, with its distinctive rust-like color, has been cherished in Japan for centuries. Its dense structure and elegant tones make it perfect for traditional stonework such as Gorinto pagodas and lanterns. The small black specks on the surface are natural biotite and iron content, unique to this stone.
Historical Background of Gorinto
While traditional Gorinto are usually assembled from multiple components, a one-piece version carved from a single stone is known as "Isshaku Gorinto." These were commonly seen from the Muromachi period (15th century) to the early Edo period (17th century) and were primarily used as grave markers. This piece continues that tradition while also serving as an ornamental sculpture.
