From the heart of Japan’s stone craftsmanship, a new collection of traditional stone works has arrived at Japanstones.shop. These pieces come from Okazaki City, a region that has preserved its stoneworking culture for more than four centuries.
Okazaki — A City Shaped by 400 Years of Stone Craft
Located in Aichi Prefecture, Okazaki is widely known as one of Japan’s most important stone-producing regions. For over 400 years, the area has been home to skilled artisans creating stone lanterns, statues, and Inari fox figures — works that have become symbols of Japanese culture.
Even today, the sound of chisels echoes through the town as craftsmen carry forward traditional techniques, shaping stone with a blend of precision, artistry, and inherited knowledge.
Meeting Artisans at Stone Festa 2025
On November 12, we visited Okazaki during the annual Stone Festa 2025. Thanks to an introduction from one of our trusted partners, we had the opportunity to meet a new stone crafting company specializing in:
- Stone lanterns
- Stone statues
- Inari fox figures
During the visit, the company president shared valuable insights about stone types, carving processes, and the long history behind traditional stone lanterns. This direct exchange with the artisans allowed us to understand the cultural depth and dedication behind each piece.
11 New Stone Items Arriving at Japanstones.shop
From this visit, we acquired 11 new stone craft items, all of which will begin rolling out on Japanstones.shop starting next week. Each piece was carefully crafted by hand and reflects the artisan’s mastery, balance of form, and traditional aesthetics.
