About Mannari Stone
This product is handmade using granite quarried in Okayama Prefecture, Japan. Granite from this area is known as Mannari Stone and is recognized for its distinctive cherry-pink color.
It is a natural stone formed about 80 to 90 million years ago. The black parts seen in the stone are natural biotite or iron, which are part of the stone’s original character.
In Japan, Mannari Stone is appreciated for its beautiful color and is widely used for gravestones, stone lanterns, and other traditional stone works.
About Oribe Stone Lanterns
This type of lantern is said to be associated with Shigenari Furuta, better known as Furuta Oribe, a military commander and tea master active from the Sengoku period into the early Edo period. For that reason, it is called an Oribe Stone Lantern.
Today, Oribe lanterns are appreciated for their strong Japanese character and their distinctive silhouette in gardens and display spaces.
About This Handcrafted Piece
This product is handmade from rough stone quarried in Japan. The stone is first machine-cut to the approximate size of the finished form, then carefully shaped and refined by hand.
The lantern follows the traditional Oribe structure of six parts: jewel finial, roof, fire box, middle support, pillar, and base. In the finished form, it is secured with adhesive and separates into two sections for handling.
The outline is carefully shaped with a grinder so that the edges remain sharp and well defined. The granite gives the piece a distinctly Japanese atmosphere, making it an easy way to bring a sense of Japanese culture into your space.
