This Daruma Bodhidharma statue is hand-carved from Natsuyama-ishi (夏山石), a premium granite quarried in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Natsuyama Stone is highly valued for its fine grain, durability, and excellent workability—ideal for traditional Japanese lanterns, Buddha statues, and torii gates.
This granite easily absorbs water, encouraging natural moss growth over time, which adds depth and aged beauty to the sculpture. Due to reduced quarrying, it has become increasingly rare and valuable in recent years.
The included base is made of York Stone from the UK, creating a harmonious blend between Japanese craftsmanship and European heritage.
This piece was meticulously carved over one week by a Japanese artisan specializing in stone Buddha figures. The dark specks in the stone are natural iron deposits, a signature feature of authentic Natsuyama granite.
