This Zen Yukimi Stone Lantern is a medium-size Japanese garden lantern handcrafted from natural Okazaki granite. Its broad roof, open light box, and balanced five-part construction give it the quiet, grounded presence associated with traditional Yukimi lanterns.

The wide roof creates deep shadows and a strong horizontal silhouette, while the openings in the light box add architectural depth when viewed from different angles.

About Yukimi Stone Lanterns

Yukimi Tourou is one of the best-known traditional Japanese stone lantern styles. Its broad, umbrella-like roof and relatively low form create a calm and balanced appearance.

The name “Yukimi” is associated with enjoying the appearance of freshly fallen snow resting on the wide roof. This broad roof also creates attractive patterns of light and shadow throughout the day.

Placed near water, moss, bonsai, gravel, or stepping stones, a Yukimi lantern can become a strong but quiet focal point in a Japanese garden.

About This Piece

This lantern is handcrafted from solid natural granite by skilled Japanese stoneworkers.

The traditional form consists of five separate components: the top finial, roof, light box, platform, and legs. Each section is individually shaped and finished before assembly.

Traditional stoneworking tools, including chisels and hammering tools, are used during the shaping process. Fine tool marks may remain on the surface and are part of the handcrafted character of the lantern.

The open light box creates visual depth and allows the lantern to take on a different appearance depending on the viewing angle, natural light, and surrounding landscape.

About Okazaki Granite

Okazaki granite is natural stone from the Okazaki region of Aichi Prefecture, one of Japan’s traditional stoneworking areas.

Granite forms when magma deep underground cools slowly over a very long period of time. This slow cooling allows visible mineral crystals to develop within the stone.

Stone from the Okazaki area has long been used for Japanese garden lanterns, Buddhist stone figures, monuments, sculptures, and architectural stonework.

The natural stone may contain dark minerals such as biotite or iron-bearing grains. These are not stains or damage but part of the natural mineral character of granite.

Natural Granite Characteristics

Natural granite is not completely uniform. Differences in grain, mineral distribution, tone, dark specks, lighter areas, and surface texture are normal.

Hand-carved tool marks and small variations in edges and surface finish are also part of the individuality of genuine handcrafted stonework.
