About Yukimi Stone Lanterns
Yukimi Tourou is a traditional Japanese stone lantern style known for its broad roof and low, balanced silhouette.
The name “Yukimi” is associated with enjoying the sight of freshly fallen snow resting on the wide roof of the lantern. This distinctive form has long made Yukimi lanterns especially suitable for Japanese garden settings.
This miniature version preserves the characteristic appearance of a traditional Yukimi lantern while making it easier to place in a smaller garden, courtyard, entryway, patio, bonsai display, or decorative indoor setting.
About This Piece
This lantern is carved from natural Japanese granite. The rough stone is first cut by machine close to the maximum dimensions required for the finished piece, and the form is then carefully shaped and refined by skilled stoneworkers.
The outline is formed with a grinder, with attention given to clean edges, proportion, and overall balance. Each stone component is carefully processed to create the distinctive Yukimi lantern form.
The original lantern design consists of five elements: the top finial, roof, fire box, platform, and legs.
For easier handling, assembly, and balance, the top finial, roof, and fire box are secured together as one section. The platform and legs are secured together as the second section. The finished lantern is therefore supplied as a practical 2-part construction.
Place the lower section on a stable, level surface, then carefully position the upper section as shown in the listing photos.
About Okazaki Nakame Stone
Okazaki Nakame Stone is a granitic stone from the Okazaki region of Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
It was formed from magma during the Late Cretaceous, approximately 70 to 80 million years ago. The magma cooled slowly deep underground, allowing visible mineral crystals to develop within the granite.
Stone from the Okazaki area has long been used by Japanese stonemasons for garden lanterns, Buddhist stone figures, sculptures, monuments, and architectural stonework.
Its natural mineral grain, durability, and traditional connection with Japanese stone craftsmanship make it especially suitable for garden stone products.
Natural Granite Characteristics
Natural granite is not completely uniform. Each piece has its own mineral distribution, grain, tone, and surface character.
The darker areas visible in the stone may include naturally occurring biotite or iron-bearing minerals. Dark specks, lighter mineral areas, fine stone grain, and subtle variations in tone are natural characteristics of granite and are not stains or defects.
Please review the photos carefully to see the actual stone surface and mineral pattern of this individual lantern.
About Kondo Stoneworks
Kondo Stoneworks Co., Ltd. is a Japanese stonemason workshop established in 1913.
The workshop shapes natural stone through cutting, grinding, carving, and finishing rather than producing molded or cast replicas. Each piece reflects both the characteristics of the original stone and the work of skilled Japanese stoneworkers.
This Mini Yukimi Stone Lantern is carefully finished with attention to proportion, balance, edges, and the traditional character of Japanese stone lantern design.
