About This Handcrafted Piece
This statue is carved from solid natural Natsuyama Stone. A craftsman specializing in stone statues spent approximately one week creating the piece.
Natural granite must be carefully shaped and refined while preserving the balance of the overall form. Small differences in carved lines, surface texture, and tool marks are part of the individuality of handcrafted stonework.
Unlike molded or cast decorative objects, this piece is created directly from natural stone, giving it the weight, texture, and presence of genuine granite craftsmanship.
About Okazaki Natsuyama Stone
Natsuyama Stone is a Japanese granite quarried in the Natsuyama area of Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture.
It was formed during the Late Cretaceous, approximately 65 to 70 million years ago, when magma deep underground cooled slowly and crystallized into granite.
Natsuyama Stone has a relatively fine grain and a tenacious, workable texture, making it well suited to detailed carving. For this reason, it has long been used for stone lanterns, Buddhist statues, guardian dogs, and other traditional stone sculptures.
Large blocks can also be obtained, so the stone has been used for torii gates, monuments, and other substantial stonework.
Because Natsuyama Stone absorbs moisture relatively easily, moss can naturally develop on its surface over time. This allows the stone to acquire a soft, aged character that blends especially well with Japanese gardens.
In recent years, reduced quarry output has made Natsuyama Stone increasingly scarce and more expensive.
Natural Granite Characteristics
Because this item is made from natural granite, variations in grain, tone, mineral pattern, and surface texture are normal.
The black or dark-colored areas visible in the stone may include naturally occurring iron-bearing minerals. These are not stains or defects.
Differences in gray tone, dark mineral areas, lighter sections, grain, carved texture, and tool marks are part of the natural character of Natsuyama Stone.
