About This Isseki Gorinto

This Gorinto is handcrafted from a single block of natural Japanese granite. The stone is first cut from raw material and then carefully shaped by an experienced Japanese stoneworker to create the distinctive form of a Gorinto.

A traditional Gorinto is generally constructed from several separate stone sections stacked vertically. A smaller Gorinto carved as one continuous piece of stone is known as an Isseki Gorinto, meaning a “one-stone Gorinto.”

Creating the entire form from one piece of granite requires careful control of proportion and balance. Each section must remain visually distinct while still forming a single unified stone sculpture.

The compact scale makes this piece suitable for a Japanese garden, bonsai display, meditation space, shelf, entryway, or other setting where a traditional Japanese stone accent is desired.

The Five Elements of a Gorinto

The distinctive shape of a Gorinto is traditionally composed of five geometric sections representing the five elements of Buddhist cosmology.

  • Earth – represented by the square lower section
  • Water – represented by the rounded section above it
  • Fire – represented by the triangular or pyramidal section
  • Wind – represented by the curved upper section
  • Void – represented by the topmost form

Together, these five forms create the characteristic silhouette of the Gorinto and express a traditional Buddhist view of the elements that compose the world.

Historical Background of the Isseki Gorinto

Gorinto have a long history in Japan and have traditionally been associated with Buddhist memorials, stone monuments, and grave markers.

Compact Isseki Gorinto carved from a single piece of stone were particularly seen from around the Muromachi period through the early Edo period. Many historical examples were used as memorial stones or grave markers.

This modern piece is newly handcrafted in 2026 while preserving the recognizable proportions and traditional character of the Japanese Gorinto.

Natural Granite Characteristics

Because this item is made from natural granite, each piece has its own mineral pattern, grain, tone, and surface characteristics.

Small dark areas in the stone may include naturally occurring biotite or iron-bearing minerals. Light-colored mineral areas, darker specks, fine grain variations, and subtle differences in tone are natural features of granite and are not stains or defects.

Please review the photos carefully to see the actual stone surface and mineral pattern of the item being offered.

About Okazaki Nakame Stone

Okazaki Nakame Stone is a granitic stone from the Okazaki region of Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Okazaki is one of Japan’s traditional stoneworking areas, known for stone lanterns, Buddhist stone figures, garden ornaments, monuments, and other carved stone products.

Geologically, Okazaki Nakame Stone can be described as Late Cretaceous granite formed roughly 70 to 80 million years ago, when magma deep underground slowly cooled and solidified into stone. This slow cooling allowed visible mineral crystals to develop within the granite.

The natural mineral grain and subtle variations in color give each carved piece an individual appearance.

Japanese Stone Craftsmanship

Kondo Stoneworks Co., Ltd. is a Japanese stonemason workshop established in 1913.

This Isseki Gorinto is shaped from natural granite by skilled stoneworkers who understand how the material responds to cutting, carving, and finishing. Rather than being molded or cast, the final form is created directly from solid stone.

Small differences in carved lines, edges, mineral patterns, and surface texture are part of the character of a handcrafted natural stone product.
