Condition: New, unused item made in April 2018.

This Komainu right-side guardian statue is a handcrafted Japanese stone sculpture made from Hanazawa Kome Granite from Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. It was originally made as part of a pair, but this listing is for the right-side figure only.

Because it is carved from real natural granite by skilled Japanese stoneworkers, each piece has its own grain, mineral pattern, color tone, and expression. The strong face, full chest, carved mane, firm leg posture, and flowing tail give this compact statue a powerful but calm presence.

Please note: The left-side figure is not included. This listing is for one right-side Komainu statue, as shown in the photos.

About Komainu

Komainu are Japanese guardian statues often seen near the entrances of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. They are usually placed as a pair, with the two figures guarding the entrance or sacred space.

This listing is for the right-side figure of the pair. The firm front-leg posture, full chest, strong face, and carved mane give this small statue a solid and expressive appearance.

Unlike large Komainu statues placed at shrine or temple entrances, this piece is compact enough for a home, garden, entryway, shop, office, study, or Japanese-style interior. It brings the feeling of Japanese stone culture into a smaller, easier-to-place format.

About Hanazawa Kome Granite

This Komainu statue is made from Hanazawa Kome Granite, a Japanese granite from the Toyota City area of Aichi Prefecture.

Hanazawa Kome Granite is known for its fine, even grain and calm whitish-gray tone. It has a good balance of hardness and workability, making it suitable for detailed stone carving. This makes it a good material for expressing the Komainu’s face, mane, leg posture, body form, and tail.

Geologically, this granite is associated with Late Cretaceous granites in the Toyota area and can be described as natural granite formed roughly 70 to 80 million years ago. This piece brings together ancient Japanese stone and modern Japanese stone-carving skill.

The black specks, mineral patterns, white and gray tones, and small surface differences visible in the stone are natural features of granite. They are not stains or defects. They are part of the natural character of the stone itself.

About This Piece

This right-side Komainu statue is carved from natural Hanazawa Kome Granite. The rough stone is first cut to size, then shaped and finished by hand while balancing the face, mane, chest, leg posture, tail, and overall form.

The forward posture and flowing tail give the statue both stability and movement. The fine grain and calm color of the granite keep the piece from looking overly decorative, while still giving it a quiet and strong presence.

This piece was originally made as the right-side figure of a pair. However, this listing is for a single figure only. The left-side companion statue is not included.
