About Okishima Stone

Okishima Stone is a hard, dense porphyritic igneous stone from Okishima, Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. It is also known locally as Okinoshima Mikage.

It is commonly described as quartz porphyry. Some classifications may also describe it as granite porphyry. Both names refer to a stone with visible quartz and feldspar crystals set in a fine gray groundmass.

Strictly speaking, this is not ordinary “plain granite.” It is a granite-related porphyritic igneous stone. When viewed up close, the crystal pattern appears on the surface and gives the stone a calm, natural character.

Geological Background

Okishima Stone is associated with Cretaceous-age geology and is believed to have formed roughly 70 to 140 million years ago.

The overall appearance is gray to slightly pinkish-gray. From a distance, it looks calm and clean. Up close, the fine crystal pattern gives the surface more depth and character.

Historical Background

Okishima once had a stone industry significant enough to influence the island’s landscape and local economy. Over time, however, stone extraction declined, and the local stone sales association dissolved around 1970.

For that reason, Okishima Stone has special value not only as a natural stone, but also as a regional Japanese material with local history behind it.
