About Yukimi Stone Lanterns
Yukimi Tourou is a traditional Japanese stone lantern style recognized by its broad roof and low, balanced form.
The name “Yukimi” is associated with the enjoyment of freshly fallen snow resting on the wide roof of the lantern. The broad roof creates a distinctive horizontal silhouette that has long been appreciated in Japanese garden design.
This miniature version retains the traditional Yukimi form while being compact enough for smaller gardens, courtyards, patios, entryways, bonsai displays, and decorative indoor spaces.
About This Piece
This Mini Yukimi Stone Lantern is made by carving solid natural granite. The rough stone is first cut by machine close to the maximum dimensions required for the finished product.
After the rough shape has been prepared, the outline is refined with a grinder. Special attention is given to the edges, proportions, and balance so that the lantern retains a crisp but natural stone appearance.
The traditional form consists of five elements: the top finial, roof, fire box, platform, and legs.
For easier handling, assembly, and balance, the top finial, roof, and fire box are secured together as one section. The platform and legs are secured together as the second section. The finished lantern is therefore supplied as a practical 2-part construction.
Place the lower section on a stable, level surface, then carefully position the upper section so that the lantern is balanced as shown in the listing photos.
Each piece is carefully processed and finished by Japanese stoneworkers. Please review the photos closely to see the actual workmanship and natural character of the stone.
About Okazaki Natsuyama Stone
Natsuyama Stone is a sculptable Japanese granite known for its fine texture and the calm, moss-aged aesthetic it can develop over time.
It was formed more than 65 million years ago in the Natsuyama area of Okazaki. The granite slowly crystallized deep underground as magma cooled, creating a dense and beautifully textured natural stone.
For generations, stone from the Okazaki region has been used in Japanese gardens and architecture and shaped by skilled stoneworkers into stone lanterns, Buddhist figures, sculptures, monuments, and other traditional stone products.
Its natural mineral structure, durability, and workability make Natsuyama Stone especially suitable for carved garden stonework. As it ages outdoors, weathering and moss can gradually give the stone an even softer and more established garden appearance.
Natural Granite Characteristics
The black or dark-colored areas visible in the stone may be naturally occurring biotite or iron-bearing minerals. These are not stains or defects.
Natural granite is not completely uniform. Differences in mineral distribution, grain, gray tone, dark specks, lighter areas, and surface texture are normal characteristics of the stone.
Each lantern therefore has its own individual mineral pattern and appearance.
About Kondo Stoneworks
Kondo Stoneworks Co., Ltd. is a Japanese stonemason workshop established in 1913.
The workshop works directly with natural stone through cutting, grinding, carving, shaping, and finishing. Rather than being molded or cast, the lantern is produced directly from solid Japanese granite.
This piece reflects both the natural characteristics of Natsuyama Stone and the craftsmanship of experienced Japanese stoneworkers.
