Aji Stone “Komame” – Seventy Million Years, Finished by the Chisel
Aji stone is widely known as one of Japan’s finest granite stones. “Komame” is the fine-grain grade within Aji granite stone, defined by an exceptionally tight and uniform crystal structure. Its origins date back approximately 85–70 million years ago (Late Cretaceous), when magma deep underground cooled slowly and crystallized into granite stone.
What makes Komame exceptional is not shine—it is density and precision. Because the grain is so fine, the stone holds crisp lines and clean edges, and it responds beautifully to traditional finishes. On a tataki (hand-hammered) surface, Komame does not rely on polish for its presence. Instead, it shows a quiet, even texture: subtle highs and lows made by the tool, and a calm matte expression that feels grounded and honest.
Over time, this finish deepens rather than fades. Light settles softly across the hammered plane, and seasonal moisture and air bring gentle changes. The stone’s character grows more natural—closer to the Japanese sense of beauty found in restraint, imperfection, and time.
Aji stone Komame, tataki-finished—where 70 million years of Earth’s slow craft meet the timeless calm of Japanese culture.
