About Okishima Stone
A stone lantern made of Japanese Okishima natural stone. The small black part is biotite or iron.
Okishima Stone is a granite porphyry quarried on Okishima Island in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Geologically, it is an igneous stone formed approximately 70 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period.
Historically, Okishima Stone was valued for its durability and was widely used in stone masonry and civil engineering works around Lake Biwa. Quarrying on the island ended in the 1970s, making Okishima Stone a rare and historically significant stone material that is no longer newly extracted today.
