Kanshūji-style Stone Lantern – A Unique Shape Rooted in Kyoto’s Temple Heritage
This lantern style is said to have been donated by Mitsukuni Tokugawa (also known as Mito Kōmon) during the Edo period. It originates from Kanshūji—a name used specifically for the lantern design—although the formal name of the temple is Kajūji, located in Kyoto.
Founded in 900 AD, Kajūji Temple was destroyed by fire in 1470 but was rebuilt around 1682. Today, it remains one of Kyoto’s most historically significant temples, with a heritage spanning over 1,100 years.
A Rectangular Interpretation of the Yukimi Lantern
The Kanshūji-style Stone Lantern is a rectangular variation of the traditional Yukimi Stone Lantern. While Yukimi Stone Lanterns typically feature soft curves and round umbrellas, the Kanshūji version adopts a distinct angular form, transforming the silhouette into a bold, rectangular shape.
This rare and unconventional design appeals strongly to enthusiasts and collectors of Japanese stone lanterns. It is admired not only for its craftsmanship but also for its deep cultural and historical roots.
