This rabbit figurine is carved from Hanazawa Stone, a granite quarried in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture. With its fine grain and cohesive texture, it is highly suited for detailed carving and is commonly used for lanterns and stone statues such as Buddha figures and guardian dogs. Because large blocks are readily available, it is also widely employed in the construction of torii gates and stone monuments.
Hanazawa Stone was formed by magma activity around 70 million years ago. It is valued for its fine-grained gray color, excellent polishability, and strong resistance to weathering.
