About the Stone — Saga Tsubaki Stone
Overview
Tsubaki Stone is a high-quality granite quarried at the eastern foot of the Tsubaki Mountain range in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, Japan. Quarrying began in 1986, making it a relatively new stone in the industry, but its performance and refined grain have earned it recognition as one of Japan’s notable granites.
Geological Background
Tsubaki Stone was formed about 80 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period, when magma cooled and solidified deep underground. Through long geological changes, it eventually emerged at the surface. It is characterized by a hard and dense structure, very low water absorption, and an excellent ability to maintain a polished luster over time.
Appearance
- Color: Calm gray with a subtle whitish tone
- Grain: Medium-grained and uniform, giving an elegant and quiet impression
- Polish: Retains a glossy finish for a long time, preserving its beauty even after years of use
Uses and Appeal
Tsubaki Stone is widely used for gravestones, but its durability and subdued color also make it suitable for stone lanterns, garden sculptures, and monuments. It is especially valued as a cost-effective domestic granite, standing alongside Tenzan Stone as one of Saga Prefecture’s representative granites.
