The Stone: Sabi-ishi — Eighty Million Years in the Making
Aji Stone, quarried exclusively in the towns of Aji and Mure in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, is celebrated among the world’s finest granites. Its origins trace back ~85–70 million years (Late Cretaceous), when deep magma cooled slowly underground, yielding a dense, even crystal structure.
Over millions of years of tectonic uplift and weathering, iron-bearing minerals near the surface oxidized, forming a warm reddish-brown patina known as “Sabi-ishi”. This hue distinguishes it from classic uniform-grey Aji granite.
Sabi-ishi unites geology and culture: a landscape written by deep time, resonating with wabi-sabi—the quiet beauty of imperfection and age. In gardens, lantern settings, gate posts, or sculpture, its tones blend with the seasons and calm the space.
