The Stone: Sabi-ishi — Eighty Million Years in the Making
Aji Stone, quarried exclusively in the towns of Aji and Mure in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, is renowned as one of the finest granites in the world. Its origins date back approximately 85–70 million years (Late Cretaceous), when deep magma cooled slowly underground to form a dense, even crystal structure.
Through tectonic uplift and vast spans of time, this granite rose to the surface. Weathering and oxidation imbued iron-bearing minerals with a warm reddish-brown patina—this is “Sabi-ishi” (rusted stone), visually distinct from the uniform grey of classic Aji granite.
Sabi-ishi embodies both geology and culture: a landscape written by deep time, harmonized with wabi-sabi—the beauty of imperfection and the quiet grace of aging. In gardens, alcoves, or as sculpture, its tones blend with the seasons and settle the mind.
Aji Stone Sabi-ishi—where Earth’s memory meets the timeless beauty of Japanese craft.
