Aji Stone “Sabi-ishi” – Eighty Million Years in the Making
Aji Stone, quarried exclusively in the towns of Aji and Mure in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, is renowned as one of the finest granites in the world. Formed approximately 85–70 million years ago (Late Cretaceous), deep magma slowly cooled and crystallized far beneath the surface. Through tectonic uplift and eons of weathering, iron-bearing minerals developed a warm reddish-brown patina—this is the distinctive “Sabi-ishi” character, different from the pure, uniform gray of classic Aji Stone.
Beyond color, Sabi-ishi expresses a union of geologic time and Japanese aesthetics. In gardens, lanterns, gate pillars, or sculpture, its warmth harmonizes with the seasons to create a calm, timeless presence. This mini Jizo embodies that dialogue between Earth’s memory and human craftsmanship.
