Aji Stone “Sabi‑ishi” — Eighty Million Years in the Making
Aji Stone, quarried exclusively in the towns of Aji and Mure in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, is renowned as one of the finest granites in the world. Its origins date back approximately 85–70 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period, when molten magma deep within the Earth cooled slowly, crystallizing into granite far beneath the surface.
Through millions of years of tectonic movement and uplift, this granite emerged to the Earth’s surface. Over further eons, it weathered and oxidized, and iron‑bearing minerals took on a warm, reddish‑brown patina. This unique coloration defines “Sabi‑ishi”—rusted Aji granite—distinct from the pure, uniform Aji Stone.
Sabi‑ishi is more than a change in color. It is a landscape born from tens of millions of years of geological history, aligned with the Japanese aesthetic of wabi‑sabi—the beauty of imperfection and the quiet grace of time’s passage.
