About Oni — A Guardian Motif in Japan
Oni are well-known figures in Japanese folklore, often depicted with horns and a fierce expression, sometimes holding an iron club (kanabō). While oni can symbolize adversity, oni imagery is also used as a protective motif—strength, resilience, and warding off misfortune.
In the Setsubun season, people chant “Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi” (“Demons out, fortune in”) to drive away bad luck and invite good fortune.
About Aji Stone “Sabi-ishi” Granite
Aji Stone is quarried only in Aji and Mure (Takamatsu City, Kagawa). It is considered one of Japan’s finest granites. “Sabi-ishi” refers to Aji granite that has naturally weathered and oxidized, developing a warm rust-toned surface. This patina is a natural phenomenon of real granite and cannot be replicated by paint or artificial finishes.
Geologically, this granite formed approximately 85–70 million years ago (Late Cretaceous), when magma cooled slowly deep underground and crystallized into dense, durable stone.
