About the Stone
Okazaki Natsuyama Stone is a high-quality granite stone formed approximately 90 million years ago. Quarried in the Natsuyama area of Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, it is known for its fine grain and excellent workability, and it has long been used in traditional Japanese stonecraft such as lanterns, Jizo statues, and other cultural stoneworks.
About the Origins of Chōzubachi
In traditional Japanese life, large stone water basins (Chōzubachi) were commonly placed outdoors near toilets, which were typically located outside the house. These basins served as a place for rinsing hands after using the toilet.
As modern Japanese homes moved the toilet indoors, the practical use of Chōzubachi declined. However, the tradition evolved—smaller basins began to be used decoratively in gardens, as vases, or even converted into bonsai pots by drilling a drainage hole.
Today, large Chōzubachi are still seen in temples and shrines across Japan, placed near entrances as sacred water vessels for ritual hand-washing (temizu). Their presence symbolizes purity and mindfulness, continuing to connect modern life with centuries-old Japanese customs.
Placement idea: Use it as a focal accent in a Japanese garden. Place it next to a bonsai to create a calm, authentic atmosphere.
