This rare Kanshuji-style stone lantern is inspired by the historical Kajūji Temple (勧修寺, read as "Kajuji") in Kyoto, Japan. While the temple's name is Kajuji, the lantern design is known as “Kanshuji” (観修寺), reflecting its unique style in the world of Japanese stonework.

Historical Background

According to tradition, this lantern design was donated by Mitsukuni Tokugawa, also known as Mito Kōmon, a famed 17th-century feudal lord and cultural figure during the Edo period. Kajūji Temple was originally founded in 900 AD, destroyed during the Ōnin War in 1470, and rebuilt around 1682. Today, it remains one of Kyoto’s most culturally significant temples, with over 1,100 years of legacy.

A Rectangular Twist on the Yukimi Lantern

Unlike traditional Yukimi lanterns that feature soft, round curves, the Kanshuji-style lantern boasts clean, angular lines. This geometric aesthetic provides a unique presence in Japanese gardens, making it a favorite among collectors and landscape designers alike.

Made by Ishitake Stone Industry Co., Ltd.

This lantern was handcrafted in 2015 by Ishitake Stone Industry Co., Ltd., a stone company based in Okazaki, Japan, with a heritage dating back to 1971. The granite used is naturally quarried from Okazaki — one of Japan’s most famous stone regions.

You may notice small black flecks in the stone surface. These are natural inclusions of biotite or iron, evidence of genuine, untouched granite.
