About Natsuyama Stone
Natsuyama Stone from Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, is known for its medium grain and toughness. It has been a traditional material for gravestones, lanterns, wall stones, and fine carvings thanks to its unique “tackiness” that allows for delicate detailing.
About Komainu
Komainu are traditional Japanese lion-dog statues placed at the entrances of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. They stand as guardians, with one statue typically having its mouth open ("A") and the other closed ("Un"), symbolizing the beginning and end of all things.
Tomatsu Stone Works produces large Komainu for shrines but also crafts smaller, collectible versions like this pair.
