Who is Bishamonten?
Bishamonten is a celestial deity in Buddhism and one of the Four Heavenly Kings, together with Jikokuten, Zōjōten, and Kōmokuten. He is also known as Tamonten and is traditionally regarded as the Guardian of the North.
Beyond Japan, this deity has been venerated across Central Asia, China, and other Buddhist regions under different names and forms. In Japan, Bishamonten is also worshipped as one of the Seven Lucky Gods, which gives him a broader and more familiar place in everyday religious culture.
He is commonly associated with blessings such as:
- Bountiful harvests
- Commercial prosperity
- Household safety
- Longevity
- Success in life and career advancement
About the Stone
Natsuyama Stone is a granite quarried in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. It is generally understood to be a Cretaceous granite formed roughly 85 to 100 million years ago. This particular piece uses a rust-toned variety characterized by its soft light brown color.
The result is a statue that feels both solid and calm: a traditional Buddhist figure expressed through a durable Japanese stone with a warm, natural presence.
About the Maker
Stone Carving Works Tomatsu is a stone workshop founded in 1902. The fourth-generation master, a graduate of an art university, specializes in Buddhist statues, komainu, busts, and dragon sculptures. The workshop is known for producing high-level stone carvings on request for other Japanese stonemasons as well.
Why this piece stands out
This is not a mass-produced decorative item. It is a genuine Japanese stone carving made by a long-established workshop, using a recognized stone from one of Japan’s best-known stoneworking regions. Its scale makes it suitable for display indoors, while its subject matter gives it a strong spiritual and cultural presence.
Notes
Please review the photos carefully for texture, color, and hand-carved details. Natural stone may show slight variations in tone, grain, and surface character. These are part of the material itself and not defects.
