We shipped a granite Oribe stone lantern from Japan to a customer in the United States by UPS.
An Oribe stone lantern is a traditional Japanese stone lantern commonly used in Japanese gardens and tea gardens. This lantern consists of six granite parts with different shapes.
The parts include flat stone slabs, three-dimensional support sections, and a firebox section with openings. Because each part has a different shape and different areas that may be vulnerable to impact, we protected them individually, divided them between two cardboard boxes, and shipped them as two UPS packages.

What We Focused On When Packing Multiple Stone Parts
An Oribe stone lantern is assembled from several stone parts with different shapes. Flat stone slabs, the firebox section with openings, and stepped or rounded support sections each have different areas that may be vulnerable to impact.
For that reason, we did not wrap all the parts together in the same way. Each part was protected individually according to its shape. After individual wrapping, tubular cardboard spacers and other materials were used to divide the open spaces inside the boxes and prevent the granite parts from touching each other directly.
We reinforced the bottom of each cardboard box with hot glue to help prevent it from opening under the weight of the stone products. Plastic straps were also used on one package to help reduce box opening and deformation.
Packing Materials Used
| Air cushioning | Used to wrap each part individually and help reduce impact during transport. |
|---|---|
| Cardboard material | Used to reinforce the outside of the individually wrapped granite parts and protect their surfaces, edges, and corners. |
| Cardboard boxes | Used as the outer boxes for dividing the individually packed parts into two separate packages. |
| Hot glue | Used to reinforce the bottom of the cardboard boxes and help prevent them from opening under the weight of the stone products. |
| Tubular cardboard spacers | Used to divide open spaces inside the boxes and help reduce movement and contact between the parts. |
| Packing tape | Used to secure the air cushioning and cardboard material and to seal and reinforce the cardboard boxes. |
| Stretch film | Used to hold individual wrapping and outer packaging together and help reduce rubbing, light dirt, and surface wear. |
| Plastic straps | Used in both directions on one package to help reduce box opening and deformation. |
| FRAGILE sticker | Attached to the outer packaging as a handling notice. |
| UPS shipping documents | Placed in pouches on top of the outer boxes for international delivery and customs processing. |
