We shipped a granite Yukimi stone lantern from Japan to a customer in the United States by UPS.
A Yukimi stone lantern is a traditional stone lantern used in Japanese gardens and Japanese-style outdoor spaces. This lantern consists of two separate granite parts: the Kasa section, the wide upper cap of the lantern, and the leg section, which supports it.
Because the two parts have different shapes, we protected each one separately using a packing method suited to its form. The Kasa section and leg section were placed in separate cardboard boxes and shipped as two UPS packages.

Why We Packed the Two Parts Separately
The Kasa section and leg section differ not only in shape, but also in the areas most likely to receive impact. The wide edge and corners of the Kasa section require protection, while the three-dimensional leg section must be kept stable inside its box.
Using separate boxes allowed us to secure each part according to its shape while preventing the two granite pieces from coming into contact. We also reinforced the bottom of each cardboard box with hot glue to help prevent it from opening under the weight of the stone product.
Packing Materials Used
| Air cushioning | Used to wrap the Kasa section and leg section separately and help reduce impact during transport. |
|---|---|
| Cardboard material | Used to protect the outside of each part and keep its position stable inside the box. |
| Cardboard boxes | Used as separate inner and outer boxes for the Kasa section and leg section. |
| Hot glue | Used to reinforce the bottom of the cardboard boxes and help prevent them from opening under the weight of the stone parts. |
| Packing tape | Used to secure the air cushioning and cardboard material, and to seal and reinforce the boxes. |
| Stretch film | Used to help reduce rubbing, light dirt, and surface wear on the outer boxes. |
| FRAGILE stickers | Attached to both outer boxes as handling notices. |
| UPS shipping documents | Placed in pouches on top of the outer boxes for international delivery and customs processing. |
