We shipped a matching pair of granite Tanuki sculptures from Japan to a customer in the United States by UPS.
A Tanuki is a Japanese raccoon dog. Tanuki stone figures are familiar decorative motifs in Japanese gardens, entryways, and storefronts. This set consists of one male and one female granite Tanuki sculpture.
Together, the two sculptures weigh approximately 9.69 lb / 4.401 kg. Although they are compact, their combined weight is over 4 kg. For international shipping, it was important to protect each sculpture separately and keep both pieces from moving inside the box.
Granite is a hard and durable stone, but the two heavy sculptures still needed to be protected from movement and direct contact during transport. We wrapped each piece individually and secured both sculptures inside the same box.

What We Focused On When Packing the Two-Piece Set
The most important point was to wrap the male and female sculptures separately so the granite pieces would not come into direct contact. Granite is durable, but if two heavy sculptures strike each other during transport, strong impact may concentrate on smaller details such as the faces and ears.
We also reinforced the bottom of the cardboard box with hot glue so it could support the combined product weight. Individual wrapping, separation inside the box, and bottom reinforcement were used together to prepare the set for international shipping.
Packing Materials Used
| Air cushioning | Used to wrap each sculpture separately and help reduce impact during transport. |
|---|---|
| Cardboard material | Used to protect the individually wrapped sculptures and keep their positions stable inside the box. |
| Cardboard box | Used as the outer box for shipping the two sculptures together. |
| Hot glue | Used to reinforce the bottom of the cardboard box and help prevent it from opening under the product weight. |
| Packing tape | Used to secure the air cushioning and cardboard material, and to seal and reinforce the box. |
| Stretch film | Used to help reduce rubbing, light dirt, and surface wear on the outer box. |
| UPS outer packaging | Used as the outer packaging for UPS international shipping. |
| FRAGILE sticker | Attached to the outside as a handling notice. |
| UPS shipping documents | Used for international delivery and customs processing. |
