We shipped a granite Yukimi stone lantern from Japan to a customer in the United States by UPS.
A Yukimi stone lantern is a traditional Japanese garden lantern often used in Japanese gardens and Japanese-style outdoor spaces. This lantern is made from granite and consists of two stone parts: the Kasa section, the upper cap of the lantern, and the leg section. The overall size is 8.86 in high, 8.86 in wide, and 8.07 in deep (22.5 × 22.5 × 20.5 cm), with a total weight of 11.84 lb / 5.37 kg.
Granite is a hard and durable stone, but during international shipping, damage can still occur if the parts move inside the box or if impact concentrates on edges, corners, rounded areas, or raised parts. For a Yukimi stone lantern, special care is needed around the wide edge of the Kasa section and the three-dimensional shape of the leg section.
For this shipment, we protected the Kasa section and the leg section separately and shipped them as two packages. We used newspaper, air cushioning, cardboard material, cardboard boxes, hot glue, packing tape, stretch film, UPS outer packaging, and FRAGILE stickers to pack each part according to its shape.

This Yukimi stone lantern weighs 11.84 lb / 5.37 kg in total. Even when a granite item is compact, the weight can create strong impact if the item moves inside the box during international transport. For that reason, we do not only wrap the parts with cushioning; we also reduce empty space and keep each stone part fixed in place.
For customers overseas, one of the biggest concerns when buying a stone product from Japan is whether the item will really arrive safely. At Japanstones.shop, we record the actual packing process with photos to help reduce that concern.

What We Focus On When Shipping a Granite Yukimi Stone Lantern Internationally
When shipping a granite Yukimi stone lantern overseas, the most important points are protecting each part separately, keeping the stone parts fixed inside the boxes, and reinforcing the bottom of the cardboard boxes.
The Kasa section and the leg section have different shapes. The Kasa section has a wide surface and edges, while the leg section has a three-dimensional form. For that reason, we do not pack both parts in the same way. Each part is protected according to its shape.
Granite is a strong stone, but packages are handled many times during international transport. If a stone product moves inside the box, the weight itself can create strong impact. We used air cushioning, cardboard material, and newspaper to protect the stone surface and edges, while also fixing the parts so they would not move inside the boxes.
We reinforced the bottom of the cardboard boxes with hot glue to help prevent the bottom from opening under the weight of the stone products. This step is not always visible from the outside, but it is an important reinforcement for safely shipping heavy stone products overseas.
Outer Protection and UPS Shipping
For international shipping, it is important to protect not only the item itself, but also the condition of the outer box.
For this shipment, after closing each cardboard box, we protected the outside with stretch film and then placed the boxes in UPS outer packaging. This helps reduce rubbing, light dirt, label peeling, and surface wear on the box during transport.
We also attached FRAGILE / HANDLE WITH CARE stickers so the packages could be handled with care during delivery.
This shipment was sent from Japan to the United States by UPS with tracking numbers, using two separate packages.
