This time, we shipped a Misaki Stone Lantern from Japan to a customer in Australia by DHL.
This Misaki Stone Lantern is a small stone lantern made for a Japanese garden. Even though it is a compact piece, it is still made of real stone. During international shipping, impact can concentrate on corners, edges, openings, and rounded parts, which may cause chips or scratches if the item is not packed carefully.
This lantern measures 8.27 in / 21 cm wide, 8.66 in / 22 cm deep, and 13.78 in / 35 cm high. The total weight is 33.67 lb / 15.26 kg. Because even a small stone lantern has real weight, we did not force all parts into one box. Instead, we packed each stone part separately.
For this shipment, each part was individually protected, fixed so it would not move inside the box, and shipped from Japan to Australia as four separate DHL parcels.
Each parcel had its own tracking number. We also sent packing photos to the customer before shipment. When buying a stone item from overseas, customers naturally want to know how it is packed. By sharing the actual packing photos, we help reduce that concern before the package leaves Japan.

Why We Packed Each Stone Part Separately
A Misaki Stone Lantern is made from multiple stone parts.
Stone is a hard material. If stone parts touch each other during shipping, impact can concentrate on a single point and may cause chips or scratches.
The roof edge, the openings of the main lantern body, the sides of the round pieces, and the small top piece all need protection suited to their shape.
For this shipment, we wrapped each part separately, fixed the parts so they would not move inside the boxes, and shipped the lantern as four separate DHL parcels.
Reinforcing the Bottom of the Boxes with Hot Glue
When shipping stone items, it is not enough to protect the product itself. The strength of the box also matters.
For this shipment, we reinforced the bottom of the cardboard boxes with hot glue to help prevent the bottom from opening under the weight of the stone.
Even a small stone lantern is much heavier than an ordinary household item. If the bottom of the box becomes weak during transit, it can lead to damage or loss. Reinforcing the box bottom is an important part of our packing process.
Fixing the Parts So They Do Not Move Inside the Box
During international shipping, a box does not always stay in the same position.
It may be turned sideways or come into contact with other parcels during pickup, sorting, air transport, customs clearance, and local delivery.
For that reason, we did not leave unnecessary empty space inside the boxes. We used bubble wrap and cardboard supports to keep the stone parts from moving.
Shipped from Japan to Australia by DHL as Four Parcels
This Misaki Stone Lantern was carefully packed in Japan and shipped to Australia by DHL.
Stone items are heavy, and each part has a different shape. Since this lantern weighs 33.67 lb / 15.26 kg in total, we chose not to place everything in a single box. Instead, we divided it into four separate parcels.
Each parcel had its own tracking number, so the delivery status could be checked. We also sent packing photos to the customer before shipment.
For customers overseas, one of the biggest concerns when buying a stone item from Japan is simple: “Will it arrive safely?”
Our store records the actual packing process with photos and shows how stone items are prepared for international shipping. By sharing packing photos with the customer, we help them confirm the condition before the shipment leaves Japan.
Packing Materials Used
| Paper | Used to prevent the stone surface from touching the workbench or packing materials directly. |
|---|---|
| Bubble wrap | Used to wrap each stone part and reduce impact during shipping. |
| Cardboard pieces | Used to support corners, flat surfaces, inside openings, and empty spaces inside the box. |
| Cardboard boxes | Used as the outer boxes for the stone parts. |
| Hot glue | Used to bond and reinforce the bottom of the cardboard boxes so they do not open under weight. |
| Packing tape | Used to seal and reinforce the boxes. |
| Stretch film | Used to protect and reinforce the outside of the boxes and cover the tape areas. |
| DHL international shipping documents | Attached as required for customs clearance and international delivery. |
| FRAGILE label | Used as a handling notice so the parcel can be recognized as a fragile item. |
Delivering a Japanese Garden Stone Lantern Overseas
A Japanese stone lantern has not only visual beauty, but also the real weight and presence of natural stone.
That weight gives depth and calmness to a Japanese garden, but it also means that careful packing is essential for overseas shipping.
When we ship stone items internationally, we check the shape, weight, and vulnerable areas of each product before packing.
For this Misaki Stone Lantern, each stone part was protected separately and shipped from Japan to Australia as four DHL parcels so it could arrive as safely as possible.
After packing, we shared photos with the customer so they could see the condition before shipment. With DHL tracking numbers, the delivery status could also be checked after dispatch.
