UPS Shipping: Chozubachi to the United States (US) — Packing Method (Japan)
Overview
When shipping a stone chozubachi internationally, what matters most is not simply “wrapping it with soft cushioning,” but controlling the weight. Granite is hard, but because it is heavy, even a small drop can concentrate impact on a single point—especially on the rim, corners, and contact edges. For that reason, we use a standardized multi-layer method: surface protection → added rigidity → zero internal movement → double-box (two-shell) protection.
This chozubachi was shipped to the United States (US) via UPS. Our goal is simple: no movement inside the box, no exposed rim or corners, and safe arrival without damage.
Packing materials used
| Newspaper (paper wrap) | Initial surface protection / scratch prevention |
| Corrugated cardboard (roll) | Reinforces the cavity and protects the rim by distributing impact |
| Air-cushion (bubble wrap) | Shock absorption / reduces point-load impacts on corners and contact edges |
| Corrugated sheets | Adds rigidity around the outside to reduce direct rim hits and compression |
| Stretch film (hand wrap) | Locks layers so nothing loosens during long-distance transit |
| Inner carton | Creates the first shell and ensures zero internal movement |
| Outer carton (double-box) | Second shell against drops, compression, and corner impact |
| Packing tape | Reinforced sealing so the carton does not deform or open under heavy load |
| Hot glue (glue gun) | Bonds the bottom of the cardboard carton to prevent the base from opening or failing under heavy weight |
| Plastic straps (PP) + buckles | Reduces carton deformation and increases external binding strength |
| Shipping document pouch | Protects invoices and paperwork while keeping them visible |
| FRAGILE label | Handling notice for sorting and delivery routes |
Step-by-step packing process
1) Cardboard roll + newspaper wrap (surface protection)

Photo: First, the chozubachi is placed on newspaper and the surface protection step begins.
We start by inserting a corrugated cardboard roll into the opening of the chozubachi. The most fragile area on a chozubachi is the rim. By reinforcing the hollow area from the inside, we reduce stress concentration on the rim when compression or impact occurs. This helps the package receive force across a wider surface instead of a single point. Next, we wrap the chozubachi with clean newspaper. This first layer protects the stone finish from scuffs and prevents direct contact between the stone and harder packing materials (cardboard, etc.).
2) After the newspaper wrap, protect the package with bubble wrap

After protecting it with bubble wrap, we wrap it further with a corrugated cardboard roll.
3) Bubble wrap + corrugated sheets (shock absorption + rigidity)

Photo: In addition to bubble wrap, we build a “rigid cushioning layer” with corrugated cardboard.
Next, we wrap the item with multiple layers of bubble wrap, then add corrugated cardboard sheets to increase rigidity. Stone damage often happens when impact concentrates on a single rim or corner, so adding rigidity helps distribute force across a wider area. We also reinforce the rolled cardboard with stretch film.
4) Place into the inner carton (snug fit + zero internal movement)

We lay cushioning on the bottom of the inner carton, then place the reinforced chozubachi inside. We minimize empty space and create a snug fit so it cannot shift inside the carton. Preventing movement is the top priority—even if the box is tilted or dropped. To prevent the bottom from failing under heavy weight, we bond the carton base with hot glue.
5) Bind the outer perimeter with PP straps (deformation prevention)

We close the double-box with cloth tape, then reinforce it further with stretch film. The cardboard carton is strengthened with yellow PP straps to increase overall rigidity.
6) Reinforce with cloth tape so the PP straps do not slip

We place the inner carton into the outer carton to create a double-box structure. Then we apply dense exterior taping to keep the box rigid and prevent it from opening or deforming during transit. This step prepares the package for impacts that can occur in international shipping—drops, compression, and corner hits.
7) UPS package and FRAGILE sticker

The weight is 10.8 lb (4.9 kg). It is heavy for its size, but because the packaging is reinforced and strict, we believe it will arrive safely to the US buyer.
When opening the package, please do so on the floor or on a stable table, and be careful not to drop the granite item.
Why this packing method works
Stone products are most likely to chip when impact concentrates on a single point. That is why we focus on:
- Distributing impact through multiple layers
- Protecting the rim from the inside with a corrugated roll
- Creating zero internal movement inside the inner carton
- Adding rigidity (a hard cushioning layer) with corrugated cardboard
- Building a two-shell structure with double-boxing
- Increasing external binding strength with PP straps
This is why we can ship stone products overseas with confidence: trackable, reinforced, and packed for real-world handling.
