DHL Express Shipping: Granite Stone Owl to the United Kingdom (UK) — Packing Method (Japan)
Overview
Shipping a heavy granite sculpture overseas is not about “soft wrapping.” The real goal is zero movement inside the box, strong shock absorption, and high compression resistance. This photo log shows the exact packing method we used to ship a Stone Owl from Japan to the United Kingdom (UK) via DHL Express.
We also keep a full photo record for transparency with the buyer and to support any carrier inspection if needed.
Shipping details
- Carrier: DHL Express
- Destination: United Kingdom (UK)
- Tracking: Provided to the buyer
- Key focus: Zero movement / protect edges & corners / resist crushing
Packing materials used
| Air cushions / bubble wrap | Primary shock absorption and surface protection for granite edges and details |
| Kraft paper | Adds a firm outer layer and helps keep the wrap tight and stable |
| Stretch film | Locks all layers so nothing loosens during long-distance handling |
| Inner carton | First box that holds the wrapped sculpture with cushioning on all sides |
| Outer carton | Second box that protects against impact and compression (double-box method) |
| Void fill (air cushions) | Eliminates gaps between cartons and prevents shifting from vibration |
| Heavy-duty packing tape | Seals seams and strengthens the carton structure |
| FRAGILE / Handle with care label | Improves visibility during sorting and delivery |
Packing steps
1) Surface protection + shock absorption (air cushions)
We start by fully wrapping the Stone Owl so no granite surface is exposed. This first layer protects the surface and reduces point-load shocks at corners, ridges, and delicate carved details.

2) Tighten the structure (kraft paper → stretch film)
Heavy items can “work loose” over time if layers are not locked. After cushioning, we add kraft paper and secure everything with stretch film so the package behaves like one solid block.
3) Inner carton placement (first box)
The wrapped sculpture goes into an inner carton sized to prevent movement. The goal is a true zero-movement condition even under vibration.

4) Double-box method (outer carton + cushioning between boxes)
Next, the inner carton is placed into a larger outer carton. The gap between cartons is filled with air cushions to create a shock-absorbing buffer and improve crush resistance during international handling.

5) Final sealing + FRAGILE marking
After confirming there is no movement, we seal all seams with heavy-duty tape and wrap the carton with stretch film for surface durability. Finally, we apply clear FRAGILE / HANDLE WITH CARE markings for visibility.

Why this packing method works
- Zero movement: The inner carton is packed so the granite sculpture cannot shift.
- Impact dispersion: Air cushions reduce point-load shocks at edges and corners.
- Structure locking: Kraft paper + stretch film prevent layers from loosening over time.
- Compression resistance: Double boxing adds a buffer against crushing during transit.
- Transparency: A full photo log is shared with the buyer and kept for carrier documentation if needed.
Estimated delivery time
DHL Express typically delivers within 3–7 business days, depending on customs clearance and local conditions. Tracking is provided so the buyer can follow the shipment from Japan to the UK.
Notes for opening the package
Granite is heavy for its size. Please open the carton on the floor or a stable table. Use a cutter lightly and avoid cutting deep into the box so you do not damage the contents or the protective layers.
