Japanstones.shop ships Japanese stone products to customers around the world. For this shipment, we sent a Chouzubachi, a traditional Japanese stone water basin, from Japan to Germany using UPS international air service.
A Chouzubachi was originally used to hold water for washing the hands and ritual purification. Today, in addition to this practical purpose, it is also placed in Japanese gardens as a design element that contributes to their traditional beauty and visual harmony.
This Chouzubachi has a recessed basin carved into the top. It was made from Okazaki Natsuyama Stone, a type of granite quarried in the Natsuyama area of Okazaki City, Japan. The stone displays the natural mineral grain characteristic of granite and is used in Japanese stonework.
The Chouzubachi measures 7.87 in wide × 7.87 in long × 4.33 in high / 20 cm wide × 20 cm long × 11 cm high and weighs 17.64 lb / 8 kg. We protected both the recessed basin and the exterior and reinforced the bottom of the cardboard box with hot glue before packing the item.

Shipping a Chouzubachi to Germany by UPS
This Chouzubachi has a rounded exterior and a recessed basin carved into the top. For this reason, the packing process needed to protect both the outside of the stone and the recessed interior.
We first inserted corrugated cardboard into the basin to protect the opening. We then wrapped the entire stone surface with a protective mat and added corrugated cardboard around the outside. Air cushions were placed inside the shipping box to reduce movement and contact during transportation.

Packing for the Recessed Shape of the Chouzubachi
Unlike a flat stone slab or a rectangular stone product, a Chouzubachi has a recessed basin carved into its upper surface. The packing therefore needed to protect the interior space as well as the exterior.
We inserted corrugated cardboard into the recessed basin before wrapping the entire item with a protective mat. Additional corrugated cardboard was placed around the outside to help protect the stone from external contact and pressure.
Air cushions were used to fill the open spaces inside the box and help prevent the item from moving during transportation. The bottom of the cardboard box was reinforced with hot glue to help prevent it from opening under the weight of the stone product.
