We shipped a marble rabbit sculpture from Japan to a customer in the United States by DHL.
This item is made of two marble parts: the rabbit sculpture itself and a marble base. Marble is a beautiful natural stone, but it has a Mohs hardness of about 3, so its surface and edges need more care than harder stones such as granite.
We also ship granite products overseas, but for this marble sculpture, we used an even more careful packing method. In particular, we focused on preventing surface scratches, edge chips, and direct contact between the rabbit sculpture and the marble base.
The package was shipped internationally by DHL with a tracking number. During international delivery, a box may be turned sideways, stacked, or come into contact with other packages during sorting, air transport, customs clearance, and final delivery. We packed this marble sculpture with those conditions in mind.
Shipment Details
| Item | Marble Rabbit Sculpture |
|---|---|
| Destination | United States |
| Origin | Japan |
| Carrier | DHL |
| Tracking | Tracking number provided |
| Structure | Rabbit sculpture and marble base |
| Packing policy | Because marble is softer than granite, the rabbit sculpture and base were protected separately and fixed in place inside the box. |
Product Size
| Length | 5.9 in / 15 cm |
|---|---|
| Width | 7.8 in / 20 cm |
| Height | 4.3 in / 11 cm |
| Rabbit Weight | 6.3 lbs / 2.858 kg |
| Base Weight | 2.4 lbs / 1.099 kg |
| Total Weight | About 8.7 lbs / about 3.957 kg |
The rabbit sculpture alone weighs about 6.3 lbs, and the marble base weighs about 2.4 lbs. Although this is a small sculpture, it still has real stone weight. For that reason, we paid close attention to the bottom of the box, the internal fixing, and preventing the two marble parts from touching each other.
Packing Process
Checking the marble rabbit sculpture
First, we checked the condition of the rabbit sculpture. Marble has a beautiful surface, but because it is softer than granite, scratches and edge chips require special attention.
Checking the marble base

Protecting the rabbit sculpture with air cushioning

Supporting the outside with cardboard and stretch film

Protecting the marble base separately

Packing the rabbit sculpture and base separately

Placing cushioning inside the box

Fixing the sculpture in place inside the box

Wrapping the outer box and adding a FRAGILE label for DHL shipment

What We Paid Attention to When Packing Marble
Marble is attractive because of its natural beauty. However, its Mohs hardness is about 3, so it requires more care than harder stones such as granite.
This rabbit sculpture consists of a rounded rabbit body and a flat marble base. If two stone parts with different shapes are packed together, vibration during transport can make them touch each other.
For this reason, we wrapped the rabbit sculpture and the marble base separately, then fixed them inside the box so they would not move during international shipping.
Why We Packed It More Carefully Than Granite Products
We also ship granite stone lanterns and stone statues overseas. Granite is a very hard stone, but even granite products require careful packing for international delivery.
This marble sculpture is softer than granite, so we handled it with extra care. We paid special attention to the carved surface, the area around the ears, the edges, and the edges of the marble base so that impact would not concentrate in one spot.
Stone products have weight. Because of that, simply wrapping them softly like ordinary lightweight goods is not enough. It is important not only to cushion the item, but also to keep it firmly in place inside the box.
Reinforcing the Bottom of the Box
For international shipping of stone products, the bottom of the cardboard box is very important.
For this shipment, we used hot glue as needed to bond and reinforce the bottom of the cardboard box so it would not open or fail under the weight. This part is not very visible from the outside, but it is an important step for safely shipping heavy stone products overseas.
Protecting the item itself is important, but it is also important that the outer box stays strong until delivery.
Packing Materials Used
| Paper | Used to help keep the stone surface from touching the work table or packing materials directly. |
|---|---|
| Air cushioning | Used to wrap the rabbit sculpture and the marble base and absorb impact during transport. |
| Cardboard material | Used to protect the marble surface and edges and to keep the packing shape stable. |
| Cardboard box | Used as the outer box. We checked that it could handle the weight of the stone product. |
| Hot glue | Used to bond and reinforce the bottom of the cardboard box to reduce the risk of bottom failure. |
| Packing tape | Used to seal and reinforce the box. |
| Stretch film | Used to keep the protective materials and outer box secure. |
| FRAGILE label | Used to show that the package should be handled with care. |
