A customer in the United States purchased a 2020 model Tsukubai stone water basin from Japan.
After confirming the order, we packed the item on the same day and shipped it from Japan to the United States by UPS international shipping with tracking.
A tsukubai is a low Japanese stone water basin often used in Japanese gardens and tea gardens. This piece measures about 9.84 in × 9.84 in × 5.51 in (25 cm × 25 cm × 14 cm) and weighs 33.73 lb (15.3 kg).
Although this item is compact, it is still a heavy stone product. If a stone item moves inside the box during international shipping, the impact can cause chips, scratches, or cracks. For that reason, we did not simply wrap the item in cushioning material. We checked the stone surface, rim, center opening, and empty spaces inside the box step by step before shipping.

Checking the Stone Basin Before Packing
Before packing, we first checked the shape of the tsukubai stone water basin.
This item has a rounded stone body and a center opening that holds water. The outer rim, bottom, and center opening are areas where impact can be concentrated during shipping.
To protect the center opening from pressure and vibration during transport, we placed rolled cardboard inside the opening. Because the stone itself is heavy, it is also important to keep the protective materials from shifting during shipping.
Packing Process
Protecting the center opening
Wrapping the stone basin with cushioning material
Adding corrugated cardboard reinforcement
Securing the item inside the box
Reinforcing the outer box with tape and stretch film
Securing the box with PP bands
Attaching UPS documents and a FRAGILE label
Keeping the Stone Basin from Moving Inside the Box
The most important point when shipping stone products internationally is to keep the item from moving inside the box.
Stone is a hard material, but a strong impact on the rim or opening can still cause chips or cracks. For a tsukubai with a center opening, both the surface and the opening need protection.
For this shipment, cushioning material was placed on the bottom, sides, and top. Cardboard supports were also added to the corners. During international shipping, a box may not always stay upright. For that reason, the packing must protect the item not only from impact from above, but also from sideways movement and angled placement during handling.
Packing Materials Used
| Bubble wrap | Used to protect the surface and rim of the stone basin. |
|---|---|
| Corrugated cardboard | Used for outer reinforcement, shape support, and impact distribution. |
| Hot glue | Used to reinforce the bottom of the cardboard box and reduce the risk of bottom failure during transport of a heavy stone item. |
| Rolled cardboard core | Used to protect the center opening and support the inside of the package. |
| Stretch film | Used to hold the packing materials in place and protect the outer box. |
| Packing tape | Used to seal and reinforce the outer box. |
| PP band | Used to secure the outer box for a heavy stone item. |
| UPS document pouch | Used to protect the international shipping documents and attach them to the top of the box. |
| FRAGILE label | Used to show that the package requires careful handling. |
Why Careful Packing Matters for Stone Products
Stone products are heavier than they look and require careful packing for international shipping.
Stone is hard, but that does not mean it is impossible to damage. If a strong impact hits an edge, rim, or opening, the stone may chip or crack. International shipping also includes many steps, such as long-distance transport, sorting, customs clearance, and final delivery in the destination country.
For this reason, when we ship stone products, we focus on keeping the item from moving inside the box, placing enough cushioning between the stone and the box, protecting the rim and opening, and reinforcing the outer box so it can support the weight.
Same-Day UPS Shipping from Japan to the United States
This tsukubai stone water basin was packed and shipped to the United States by UPS on the same day after the order was confirmed.
For overseas customers, buying a heavy stone item from Japan can raise understandable questions. Will it really arrive safely? How will it be packed? Can I track the shipment? Can a heavy stone item be shipped internationally?
To help answer those questions, we record the actual packing process and publish real shipment examples with photos.
A tsukubai is not just a garden ornament. It brings the quiet feeling of a Japanese garden, the presence of water, and the natural texture of stone into an outdoor space.
For that reason, packing and shipping after the sale are also part of the value of the item.
This tsukubai was carefully packed in Japan and shipped to the United States by UPS with a tracking number. The customer can check the delivery status during transit.
