This order came in on a Saturday. UPS, DHL, and FedEx are closed on Saturdays and Sundays, so I shipped it the same day by Japan Post EMS, which operates seven days a week. Because this was a small but heavy stone item, the top priority was not just surface protection, but preventing movement inside the box. International EMS handling can involve multiple transfers, so I packed it with close attention to bottom support, side reinforcement, and overall box stability.
Packing Priorities for This Shipment
This item is not large, but because it is made of stone, its weight is concentrated in a small body. If it moves even slightly inside the box, impact can be transferred directly into the item. For that reason, I did not rely on soft cushioning alone. I combined cushioning with corrugated cardboard support so the item itself would stay more stable during transport.
The four main priorities were protecting the surface, supporting the bottom, reinforcing the sides, and reducing empty space inside the box. In addition, the bottoms of each cardboard layer were reinforced with hot glue so they would be less likely to open under weight. The goal was not to make exaggerated claims, but to create practical packing for real EMS shipment conditions.

Packing Steps
The stone Jizo was wrapped with air cushioning and reinforced with cardboard.
First, I wrapped the item in bubble cushioning, then added corrugated cardboard around the outside for reinforcement. This protects the surface and also helps keep the packed shape more stable. Because weight tends to concentrate on the bottom, the bottoms of the cardboard layers were reinforced with hot glue at this stage.
After wrapping the stone Jizo with air cushioning and cardboard, I fixed it securely inside the box.
After placing the packed item inside the outer box, I filled the surrounding space to reduce internal gaps. This step helps keep the item from shifting during transport. The bottom of the outer box was also reinforced so it would be less likely to deform under concentrated weight.
The outer cardboard box was reinforced with stretch film and labeled as fragile.
This is the final state after sealing. The outer box was firmly taped, labeled as fragile, and shipped the same day by EMS. Tightening the outside of the package helps keep the entire box from loosening during handling.
Why EMS Was Used
For this Canada shipment, I chose Japan Post EMS because it was Saturday and EMS was the practical option still operating that day. For a small stone item like this, it is more important that the contents remain stable inside the box than making the package unnecessarily large. In that sense, EMS worked well as a practical shipping method for this dispatch.
Post-Dispatch Reassurance
Because this parcel was shipped the same day, the waiting time between packing completion and handoff to the carrier was kept short. For international shipments, being able to move the parcel out immediately can itself be reassuring.
EMS also provides tracking, which makes it easier to follow the shipment after dispatch. Combined with careful packing, that gives a clearer sense of what happens after the parcel leaves Japan.
