Overview
Stone feels “tough,” but international shipping is tough in a different way. The real risk is not the material cracking on its own—it is drops, corner impacts, carton deformation, and the tiny movement inside the box during multi-hub handling. For this shipment, we sent a small stone sculpture set (2 pieces) to the United States via DHL Express.
The goal is simple: protect edges (corners and ridgelines) / absorb shocks / eliminate all internal movement. In addition, we used hot glue to bond and reinforce the carton bottom to reduce base flex under load.
Item size & weight (2 pieces)
| Piece | Length | Width | Height | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Piece 1 (left: larger) | 2.56 in (6.5 cm) | 2.95 in (7.5 cm) | 6.1 in (15.5 cm) | 2.21 lb (1.05 kg) |
| Piece 2 (right: smaller) | 1.97 in (5 cm) | 2.17 in (5.5 cm) | 4.33 in (11 cm) | 1.07 lb (485 g) |
Shipping details
- Carrier: DHL Express (tracking provided)
- Destination: United States
- Item: Maria stone sculpture (2 pieces)
- Key focus: Edge protection / zero movement / carton rigidity / bottom reinforcement
Packing materials used
| Bubble wrap (thick) | Shock absorption + vibration control (never let stone touch stone) |
| Kraft paper | Surface protection + a clean slip layer under wrapping (prevents scuffs) |
| Corrugated cardboard (flat sheets) | Adds rigidity and spreads crushing forces (do not rely on soft layers only) |
| Corrugated cardboard (wrap/liner) | Conforms to curves and forms a reinforced shell (cylindrical strength) |
| Paper tube | Creates a protective buffer zone (side-impact crush guard) |
| Carton (outer box) | Outer carton (rigidity is built by the packing structure, not by assumptions) |
| Hot glue (hot-melt adhesive) | Bottom bonding & reinforcement: reduces base flex so load is less likely to concentrate at one point |
| Cloth tape / OPP tape | Stronger sealing (prevents peeling and tearing) |
| Stretch film | Surface abrasion protection + moisture/dirt resistance (hub handling) |
| DHL flyer bag | Final outer cover (extra protection against rain, dirt, and scuffs) |
| FRAGILE label | Handling notice (labels help, but structure is what protects) |
Packing steps
1) Check the contents (protect each piece separately)

Photo 1: Always protect the two pieces separately. Stone-to-stone contact can cause chips.
First, confirm the number of pieces, shapes, and which surfaces could touch. Stone can chip easily when impacts hit a point, so we prioritize edges, corners, and ridgelines.
2) The design idea (soft + rigid layers)
The key is combining a “soft layer” with a “rigid layer,” so carton deformation is less likely to reach the stone.
3) Wrap each stone piece with thick cushioning (the core shock-absorbing layer)
Wrap each piece individually with thick bubble wrap. The point is not “thin wrap everywhere,” but extra thickness on corners and edges.
4) Build a crush guard using a “cylinder + paper tube” (strong against side impacts and compression)

Photo 2: After wrapping, we form a cylindrical structure to resist side impacts and compression.
After bubble wrapping, we wrap corrugated liner around the outside to make the package rigid, and combine it with a paper tube to create a crush-resistant shape. DHL shipments often pass through multiple hubs, so we assume side pressure and design the structure to “take load as a cylinder.”
5) Bond and reinforce the carton bottom with hot glue (reduce base flex)
Even small stone items can be heavy. If the carton bottom flexes during transit, the cushioning can compress unevenly and create “extra room” for movement. To prevent that, we bond the carton bottom with hot glue to increase rigidity. The goal is to reduce bottom deformation so impacts are less likely to concentrate at one point.
6) Fix everything in place (zero movement is the goal)
Once the items are inside, fill all gaps on every side with cushioning so nothing shifts—even if the box is gently shaken. The finished state is not “it fits,” but it cannot move.
7) Wrap the carton with stretch film (abrasion, moisture, and surface tear protection)

Photo 3: Stretch film protects the carton surface and reduces fraying from steps, edges, and long handling chains.
8) Final outer cover with a DHL bag (extra protection against rain, dirt, and scuffs)

Photo 4: Final step—cover with a DHL bag and apply a FRAGILE label, ready to ship.
Why this packing method works
- Separate the two pieces: eliminates stone-to-stone contact (a common cause of chipping)
- Soft → rigid layering: bubble wrap (absorb) + cylinder/paper tube (resist compression) reduces deformation transfer
- Reinforced carton bottom: hot glue reduces base flex and prevents “loosening” inside the box
- Zero movement: stops micro-shifting and repeated edge impacts
- Outer abrasion protection: film + DHL bag helps against scuffs, moisture, and dirt
Estimated delivery time
For DHL Express to the United States, typical delivery is often 2–6 business days (timing can vary due to customs and local conditions).
Notes for opening the package
Stone can be heavy for its size. Open the package on the floor or a stable surface, and use a cutter lightly so you do not cut into the contents.
If you plan to use it outdoors, place it on a stable base. Avoid direct impact to edges—stone is durable, but edge impacts can still cause chips.
