Visiting a Stone Company in Moriyama Ward, Nagoya — Large Japanese Stone Lanterns at an Architectural Stone Specialist

On August 25, 2026, I visited a stone company in Moriyama Ward, Nagoya.

This visit was part of my sales efforts to expand the supplier network for Japanstones.shop.

My office is in Mizuho Ward, Nagoya, but until now I had very little direct contact with stone companies located within Nagoya itself.

The company I visited now focuses mainly on architectural stonework. According to the company president, much of its work involves installing granite panels used on the exterior walls of commercial buildings.

Although all of these businesses work with stone, the stone industry is highly specialized. Some companies focus on Japanese garden stonework, others on gravestones, and others on architectural stone construction.

Several stone lanterns were lined up along the wall of the company building.

I asked the company president for permission before taking photographs.

Among the lanterns I saw were a large Kanshuji-type stone lantern, Kasuga-type stone lanterns, and Oribe-type stone lanterns.

Although architectural stone is now the company's main business, traditional Japanese garden stone lanterns were still displayed on the property.

About the Stone Company I Visited

Different Stone Companies Have Different Specialties

This visit reminded me that stone companies can specialize in very different types of work.

The stone professionals I usually work with through Japanstones.shop often handle Japanese garden stone lanterns, purification basins, and stone carvings. This company, however, focuses mainly on architectural stone.

Even when the material is the same granite, producing stonework for a Japanese garden and installing stone panels on the exterior of a building require different skills, equipment, and experience.

A Large Kanshuji-Type Stone Lantern

One of the largest pieces I saw during the visit was a Kanshuji-type stone lantern.

Large Japanese garden stone lanterns are made from multiple stone components and can become extremely heavy when assembled.

Kasuga-type and Oribe-type lanterns also come in many sizes, but very large examples like the ones I saw here require a different shipping approach from smaller garden lanterns.

Overseas Shipping for Large Stone Lanterns

For stone lanterns of this size, I would normally plan for ocean freight rather than air freight.

The lantern would be separated into its individual stone components, secured in wooden crates or on pallets, and shipped as sea freight.

With large stone products, the planning must include not only the product price but also packing, ocean freight, unloading at the destination, and installation.
