Aichi, Japan Jizodo Visit Report 2026 Kota Town No.1 Fudogaike
Roadside Jizo Shelter near Fudogaike Pond in Kota, Japan — Stone Buddhist Statues on the Way to Kireigu Shrine
On May 22, 2026, after visiting a stonemason’s shop in Kota Town, I was on my way to Kireigu Shrine.
Along the road beside Fudogaike Pond, I found a small roadside Jizo shelter.
Recently, my eyes seem to have become tuned to stonework. Stone torii gates, komainu, stone lanterns, Jizo statues, and stone water basins naturally catch my attention as I travel along local roads in Japan.
This Jizo shelter does not stand out with a large signboard. It sits quietly beside a mountain road, near the water, beneath a concrete slope, with two stone Buddhist statues sheltered inside.

A Small Jizo Shelter beside the Road near Fudogaike Pond
This Jizo shelter stands beside the road along Fudogaike Pond. I did not see a large information board or a sign explaining its history. It is a small roofed shelter set directly beside the road, under a concrete slope.
Inside the shelter are two stone Buddhist statues. The statue on the left joins its hands in prayer and stands on a lotus pedestal. The Jizo statue on the right holds a staff, and flowers had been placed in front of the figures.
A notice at the shelter says not to leave monetary offerings. It gave me the impression that this is not a place for collecting money, but a place kept for quiet prayer.
While preparing this article, I also searched online, but I could not confirm the official name or detailed history of this Jizo shelter.
After Visiting Fudogaike Pond and the Jizo Shelter
Local faith does not exist only at large shrines or famous temples. It can also be found along a mountain road, beside a pond, and under a concrete slope where a small Jizo shelter has been cared for over time.
This small Jizo shelter beside Fudogaike Pond was a quiet place where the water, the mountain road, and the stone Buddhist statues came together in Kota, Japan.
