Jizo is the Buddhist Jizo Bodhisattva, and is the most familiar object of worship for ordinary people in Japan.
All over Japan, they are enshrined not only in temples but also at road crossroads and mountain paths, protecting the safety of travelers and the safety of the people.
This piece is rare these days, as it was created by a stonemason using the traditional hand-carving method, taking time and care to create it.

It took a stonemason a week to make.
The black part of the stone is iron.
